The East goes to waste:an execrable sight

What hadn’t the East ? The richest in mineral wealth in India ,the ageless torch-bearer of the oldest heritage in this sub-continent ,the very natural abode of the most phantasmagorical coalescence of the heights and the hollows ,the green and the gray ,the pedantic and the gentry ,the embryo of the time-defying literary gullivers like Tagore and Bankim ,the world-struck religio-social samaritans like Buddha , Chaitanya and Vivekananda ,the most self-sacrificial Freedom-martyrs like Khudiram and Bagha Jatin ,the most hailed national patriots like Netaji and Shyamaprasad ,the astounding scientific path-finders like Satyen Bose and Mahalanobis ,the safest haven for pursuit of varied beliefs and rites ,this East , has for long time past, been gradually sinking into decay,dust and desert .And ,pathetically, right before our hapless eyes .Unless we buckle our armour right now ,the whole of East is feared to exist as a footnote to Indian history , yes , I mean ,West Bengal ,Bihar , Orissa and Jharkhand ,the quadruple children of East India seem to hang on tenterhooks of a forthcoming ominous political headcrash somersault.
The ills of the East are a long list , of which , overpopulation ,environmental degradation ,pervasive corruption ,poverty ,illiteracy ,superstitions,dogmas ,gender in equality ,exploitation , atrocity , unemployment ,no-autonomy of women , vapid political brain-washing , are just a few to rehearse from memory .The much-coveted National Rural Employment Guarantee Act ,touted to have worked miracles in Andhra Pradesh ,has miserably met with a downright failure in the States of the East .And , why? Because the too-wise Eastern politicians make this unequivocal answer that the scheme is target-oriented when it is desired to be people-centric.The tribals of the four States are simply allowed to feed on nothing even though they are symbolically represented in the States’political bodies .For long the tribals , who revered the Earth as their fount of subsistence and sustenance , are severed from their ancient roots on the pseudo-ground of maintenance of ecological equilibrium or by the most shamelessly blatant political masquerading of promises delivered in maidans which do never echo . When pretence and hypocrisy ,pose and gimmick ,blaring speeches and sententious quotes of the so-called foreign political prophets do not avail ,the politicians take resort to secretive , and more often , to lethal measures to silence the hungry mouths .Indeed,they are the modern Edmund Burkes to uphold the view,`If requests fail ,force remains .’ What they do not recite to themselves is ,`If force fails ,nothing remains .’
Our politicians ought to remember that a hungry man is more dangerous than an angry man ,a saint can sleep for years over sex ,but a beggar cannot , over an empty bowl .There is no ethico- political bar for the latter to dog the footsteps of whosoever gives him a handful . Incidentally ,our politicians should please remember a very contextual line from St.Luke:`Take heed not to do your alms-giving in presence of men lest you are seen by God .’The implication is ,public verbal tabloids won’t work , they can’t ; instead ,they should take all their political antagonists as their brothers in arms,shedding off their own long-practised egos and step-brotherly attitudes towards them , to work to-gether ,heads and hearts sincerely joined , to better `them’ who are the most removed from our ken .This is the last straw for them to clutch on to save their doomsday deluge lurking in the near shadows .
