As per SOLAS, it's now mandatory to pressure test Immersion Suits every 3 years. But no-where it mentions that it is to be done by outside Workshop.

Still many are spending money on this by appointing outside Workshops for this simple job, which can be very easily done on-board. Thanks Deva. But on one ship, the Class NK surveyor told us that the ship-made equipment is better & more practical than the market ones

Yes, Unitor has these test kits and these costs approx USD100/-.
these can be tested by ship staff onboard.

Many thanks Mr. Ashoke, for warning us all. Yes ..... this is obviously a very important aspect, which didn't occur to me at all. May be the author of the Blog, Mr. Rajesh can throw some light?


By the way, does anyone know whether ready-made kits are available in the market or how much does it cost?

The topic "Onboard Pressure Teting of Immersion Suits" is quite interesting and useful.

This can be done on board but I believe the process need some close attention.

After completion of the Pressure Testing on board, it is extremely important to ensure that the wet Immersion Suites are very well dried up inside / outside before packing them back in their respective carry bags. If the Immersion Suites are not properly dried up before they are packed in their bags, the wet stitches on the seams can rot, become weak and tear off much earlier than their actual life. A Senior Officer must supervise the whole process of Pressure Testing and Repacking in good order. Otherwise, we will land up spending more money in buying new Immersion Suites soon.

It is nice idea
However some Flag states like Cayman islands, Cyprus and Liberia insist on the test being done by shore stations.

Panama allows the test to be done onboard by shipstaff with documented proof for the perusal of attending surveyor.

I have some photos of the idea used in one of my ships. However I have no idea how to attach the photos with the comment. 

May be SamD can help in this
